: "Transgender" is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity or expression differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. The initialism evolved over time to be more inclusive. In the 1970s, "gay and lesbian" was the standard term; by the 1990s, "LGBT" (and later "LGBTQ+") was adopted as bisexual and transgender individuals gained broader recognition within the movement.
