Elias felt a cold, wet hand rest on his real shoulder. He didn't look back. He couldn't. He just watched the screen as the "Close" button finally appeared. He clicked it, but the room stayed dark.

The figure on the screen stepped into the frame. It was tall, wearing a suit that looked like it was made of wet charcoal. It didn't have a face, just a smooth surface where features should be. It walked toward the desk—toward where Elias was sitting—and leaned over his shoulder.

On the monitor, the creature stared directly into the "camera" of the video player, which was now showing a reflection of Elias's own terrified face. The hum stopped.

On the screen, a hand—long, pale, and multi-jointed—reached from the shadows of the hallway and gripped the edge of the doorframe.

A line of text scrolled across the bottom of the video player: Buffer complete. Commencing synchronization.

The file sat on the corner of the desktop, a generic grey icon labeled URE-088-MR.mp4. It had appeared after the last system update, tucked away in a temporary folder that shouldn’t have existed.

When Elias first clicked it, the player opened to a black screen. There was no seeker bar, no volume control, and no "X" to close the window. For the first thirty seconds, the only sound was a low-frequency hum that vibrated the pens on his desk. Then, the image resolved.

He froze. The perspective was from the ceiling corner, looking down at his door. On the screen, the door was closed. In reality, it was cracked open just an inch. He looked toward the real door, then back at the screen.
