The first season of The Last Kingdom , which premiered in 2015, is an eight-episode medieval epic that adapts the first two novels of Bernard Cornwell's The Saxon Stories : The Last Kingdom and The Pale Horseman . Set in 9th-century England during the Norse invasions (866–878 AD), it follows the journey of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon noble born who is captured and raised by Danes.

The story centers on Uhtred’s "split loyalties" between his Saxon heritage and the Viking culture that raised him. After his surrogate Danish family is murdered, he is forced to flee and eventually enters the service of King Alfred the Great in Wessex.

Uhtred’s primary motivation throughout the season is to reclaim his ancestral home of Bebbanburg from his usurping uncle while avenging his adoptive father, Earl Ragnar.

The broader historical arc focuses on King Alfred's vision of a united "England" as Wessex stands as the "last kingdom" resisting total Danish conquest. Key Characters
