If you see the dreaded crash, it usually means: The shortcut is pointing to the wrong "Start In" directory.

By default, Call of Pripyat often buries saves in your Windows "Documents" folder. You can change this by editing the very first line of fsgame.ltx :

Permissions are blocked (try running the game as Administrator).

This file acts as the "FileSystem" configuration. It maps out the directory structure so the X-Ray Engine knows where to pull textures, sounds, and—most importantly—your progress.
