Heaven: Mieko Kawakami Epub
Set in Japan in 1991, the story follows an unnamed 14-year-old narrator nicknamed "Eyes" because of his lazy eye, which makes him a target for relentless, often brutal bullying. He finds a tentative lifeline when he begins receiving secret notes from a classmate named Kojima, who is also ostracized for her poverty and "dirty" appearance. Their friendship is built on mutual recognition of pain and shared letters, culminating in a clandestine outing to an art museum to see a painting Kojima calls "Heaven". However, as the bullying at school escalates to extreme levels, their bond is tested by their diverging views on how to survive.
One of the bullies, Momose, argues that life has no inherent meaning and that people are simply driven by their own desires. He views their suffering as a matter of chance rather than justice. Heaven Mieko Kawakami epub
