Miller froze. He didn't hear anything in his headphones. He checked the source code. The line was hard-coded into the file, but it didn't match the audio. He hit the spacebar to pause, but the video kept running.

But as the scene shifted to the crime scene, something was wrong. Miller leaned in. A line appeared in the subtitle file that wasn't in the script. [Sound of footsteps behind you] Columbo subtitles English S01E02

[Suspenseful music swells] FRANKLIN: You're not going anywhere. Miller froze

Miller backed his chair away from the desk. He had stolen the master tapes to sell on the black market, replacing them with clever fakes. No one could have known. The line was hard-coded into the file, but

He clicked play. On screen, the investigator Ken Franklin was murdering his victim. Miller tapped his keyboard, timing the text.

Miller’s heart hammered. "It's a prank," he whispered. "The collector is messing with me."

A heavy hand dropped onto Miller’s shoulder. He spun around, but the room was empty—except for the smell of a cheap, stale cigar lingering in the air.
